Tonkatsu Sapporo-style! Yummo!
When I was there last year, I had the Ippudo ramen (branches in NY + S’pore) which was artery-clogging as hell but bloody good in the heart of a Hokkaido winter.

I’ve also just returned from Singapore and went to the newly opened Ippudo branch in the newly re-furbished Mandarin Galleria. Not bad but obviously, not as good as eating it in a true blue Nippon ramen shop with snow falling outside.

Wanted to try Santouka in S’pore but it was a bit of a hike from Orchard.

I heard Tampopo ramen in S’pore is pretty good for their black haired pig ramen?

yeah the chips are amazing, i was driving down the great ocean road a few weeks ago to show some friends from europe, when we stopped for lunch and coffee. i was so amazed at the standard of coffee in a tourist town, its so often the case with tourist towns that the coffee and food standard is below average, not the case with milk bottle, me and my friends will be back for a pickle burger

I am starving right now. Brisbane also has a fancy icecream dessert place on Park st, Milton. called blue lotus? By the way, the best gelati I have had so far in my life was from Brisbane ( I can’t rember the name of the shop at the moment) My brother would know.

Mellie and Joyce thanks for that post. I am craving that idea already. Any chance of organizing small meet up there in the future? I am still In warrnambool for 2 weeks. and going to start a busy rotation in orthopedics when i get back to melbourne. But, once i know I have a thursday free?

I completely agree with you, it’s about time Melbourne got a dessert-only restaurant. Even little ol’ Brisbane (where I grew up) started Freestyle Tout about 10 years ago. For the moment Pierre Roelofs at Rosamond is the only place I can think of that specialises in desserts (thanks to Mellie for the shout out).

In April 1996 my bride and I stayed at the Merrijig Inn on our honeymoon. We had a delightful attic room, with fluffy pillows and doonas, looking over the water. It was cosy and romantic, and the sense of history palpable. As fot the restaurant, I dont remember the food as much as the quirky service. I’m sure if the food was anything like the above, I would have remembered it! Nevertheless, it was certainly a memorable stay for us!

I ate their vegetarian tasting menu this summer and LOVED it. Their vego take on surf’n'turf is very cool. We booked accommodation elsewhere, though, so can’t help you out there.

Arh Luke thanks for the correction. Hooked got that award in 2009 not 2010.
I also have a favorite seat on your table. On the communal table, facing the counter and slightly to the left of the table center piece. The other very good one is the bech outside on a warm day.

I actually want to take a year off. but i can’t decide whether to sign up for physicians training this year to make it count or not. It’s more of a just in case thing. What are you thinking?

I am really excited about them at the moment too. The crunch edges the snow peas out with a bit more tenderness. I will have a look at the tomatoe shop. Their tomatoes are pretty good too. especially the very ripe ones that are discounted.

I’m totally loving sugar snap peas at the moment. If you can’t grow your own (like me who lives in an apartment), the tomato store at the Vic Market has some particularly good ones. But ask them to give you the expensive fresher ones from the back, not the cheap ones up the front. Crisp and super sweet!

I understand the demands of medical training and have to say that after 5 years of working non-stop post graduation, I’ve come to a point where I realise that I need to take a step back and reflect – is this really all there is to life?

When broad beans are young and at the start of the season, I don’t usually “double pod”, as that outer rubbery layer is generally quite tender. Visually though, they look much better double podded.

As the broad beans get older (and bigger), you will definitely need to double pod, as the skins can get as tough as boot leather.

I love, love, love broad beans. They always herald the Spring.

Hello there! I stumbled upon your fabulous blog via Tummy Rumbles and I have to say, I don’t know which is better – your photos or your food!!!

I can only deduce that you are a medico from your snippets and being one myself, I am in awe how you manage to balance your love for food and photography with such a demanding job.

Keep up the good work! You have inspired me to finally get that Nikon I’ve been putting off and pay more attention to my own love for the culinary arts.

PS: Love that Melbourne reflections photo. Looked like something Monet would have painted!
